Wondering why South Park is suddenly in the middle of a political controversy? A recent post from the Department of Homeland Security has sparked debate online, drawing an unexpected response from the show’s official account. The incident comes shortly after renewed criticism from the Trump administration over the show’s latest season.
Here’s what we know about the DHS post, South Park’s reaction, and the political tension that followed.
South Park responds to DHS co-opting the show to recruit ICE agents
On August 6, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security used a screengrab from South Park to promote Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recruitment through a post on X, linking to JOIN.ICE.GOV.
DHS did not initially explain the context of the screengrab in the post. In a later statement, spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said, “We want to thank South Park for drawing attention to ICE law enforcement recruitment. We are calling on patriotic Americans to help us remove murderers, gang members, pedophiles, and other violent criminals from our country” (via Fox News). The statement also highlighted benefits for new recruits, including a $50,000 signing bonus, student loan forgiveness, and retirement packages.
Shortly after the DHS post, South Park’s official X account replied, “Wait, so we ARE relevant?.” The comment referenced an earlier statement from White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers, who criticized the show following its July 23 season premiere. Rogers said, “This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention” (via Variety).
The season 27 premiere parodied Trump, showing him with the devil and referencing the Epstein case. When Satan asked if Trump was on the Epstein list, Trump responded, “I’m not telling everyone to relax! Relax, guy!”
DHS’s use of the screengrab coincided with heightened recruitment efforts for ICE under the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The upcoming South Park episode featuring the ICE storyline was scheduled to air the same evening. Reps for South Park did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
