New GOT Spin-off Recreates Huge Tyrion Lannister Moment With a Twist

Episode 4 of the GOT spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrived early on HBO Max and recreated one of the most memorable moments from Game of Thrones with a twist. In the original series, Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister experienced multiple trials by combat. Peter Claffey’s Ser Duncan the Tall / Dunk faces an even more dire predicament in the new show as he discovers he must find six other individuals to fight alongside him.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms builds upon Game of Thrones’ trial by combat

Game of Thrones introduced trial by combat in Westeros in Season 1 when Tyrion’s champion, Jerome Flynn’s Bronn, fought Ser Vardis Egen. Later, in Season 4, Pedro Pascal’s Oberyn Martell became Tyrion’s champion to avenge the murders of his sister and her children and fought Gregor Clegane.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which serves as a prequel to the original series, is set to depict a bigger version of trial by combat with the Trial of Seven, in which seven fighters take on an equal number of opponents to determine the guilt or innocence of a person.

What exactly is a Trial of Seven?

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4, Duncan has the option to ask for trial by combat. However, Finn Bennett’s Prince Aerion surprises everyone by asking for the Trial of Seven. Neither Aeron’s father, Sam Spruell’s Prince Maekar, nor Dunk knows what it is. However, Bertie Carvel’s Prince Baelor does. As he explains, it’s another form of trial by combat: “ancient” and “seldom invoked.”

According to Prince Baelor, the custom came to Westeros with the Andals when they crossed the Narrow Sea. Notably, the Faith of the Seven is the religion that the Andals brought with them, and it is the prevalent religion in Westeros when Game of Thrones and its spin-offs take place. As a result, the belief is that if seven champions fight, given that the gods are also as many, they are more likely to intervene and punish the guilty.

Dunk spends the rest of the episode looking for champions. Ultimately, Prince Baelor steps up to stand beside him.
