The Hightowers just pulled off the biggest deception in HOTD history. House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3 reveals a shocking twist involving Daeron Targaryen and a bold military move that changes the entire war.

House of the Dragon’s Daeron Targaryen and Tumbleton twist
Episode 3 of House of the Dragon Season 3 delivers a major twist involving Daeron Targaryen and the strategic town of Tumbleton. Ormund Hightower (James Norton) initially surrenders to Daemon (Matt Smith) at the start of the episode. He hands over a boy presented as Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and Viserys (Paddy Considine).
Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) decides to spare the boy’s life and send him to the Night’s Watch. She then brings Alicent to see her son one final time before his departure. However, Alicent immediately recognizes that the boy is not actually Daeron. Ormund deceived Daemon’s forces by sending a fake Daeron as a decoy during the surrender.
The real Daeron Targaryen first appeared in Season 3, Episode 1, living as Ormund’s ward in Oldtown. He possesses a legitimate claim to the Iron Throne through his Targaryen bloodline. Ormund’s deception reveals his cunning strategy to protect the young prince from Rhaenyra’s forces.
Meanwhile, a burnt messenger from Tumbleton arrives at King’s Landing with alarming news. Ormund has seized the market town by force after his supposed surrender. Tumbleton sits roughly 180 miles southwest of King’s Landing near the border of the Crownlands.
The town holds personal stakes for Hugh the Hammer (Kieran Bew), whose wife relocated there to live with her brother. Ormund’s forces have taken the town’s people captive and brought Daeron’s dragon, Tessarion, inside its walls. Rhaenyra now faces a difficult choice regarding Tumbleton’s fate. Sending dragons risks burning innocent civilians loyal to her cause.
However, allowing the Hightowers to hold Tumbleton also causes suffering to her people. “Remind them who now commands,” Rhaenyra declares, but Ormund’s bold moves prove that commanding the throne hardly guarantees control over the realm.
House of the Dragon Season 3 releases new episodes every Sunday at 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
