Tom Holland called one Marvel star after landing his role in The Odyssey, and the reason makes perfect sense. The actor revealed who he reached out to first and what advice shaped his experience on Christopher Nolan’s set.
Tom Holland’s The Odyssey role prompted a call to Robert Downey Jr.
Tom Holland called Robert Downey Jr. after landing the role of Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Holland told PTI that he reached out because Downey won an Oscar for Nolan’s previous film Oppenheimer. Holland said, “Yeah, I definitely had a very long conversation with Robert Downey.”
Holland also shared that a close friend encouraged him to work with Nolan. He revealed that the friend served as a stunt coordinator on Nolan’s films for around 20 years. Holland added, “Every time he and I would get together for dinner, he would tell me you have to do whatever it takes to find yourself on a Christopher Nolan set.”
The actor also reflected on how he approaches learning from experienced colleagues on set. Holland explained, “What I love about being an actor is that there are times on set where you really get to stand in the middle of the room and do nothing.” He clarified that those moments happen when the camera stops rolling.
Holland specifically praised his co-stars Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon as key influences during filming. He stated, “I like to learn from people by watching them and watching the way they behave and treat people and work with people.” Holland described Hathaway and Damon as ideal role models on set.
The actor expressed gratitude for having such experienced collaborators around him throughout the production. Holland said, “I had the perfect footprints to try and follow in Annie and in Matt. So I was kind of spoilt for choice when it comes to lessons.” The Odyssey features Holland as Telemachus, with Matt Damon starring as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope.
The film premieres in theatres on July 17, 2026.
