DC Canceling The Batman Part III Would Repeat Its Biggest Modern Blunder

With news of The Batman Part II‘s delay, will Matt Reeves be able to finish his trilogy with a third movie? If DC were to cancel The Batman Part III, it would be a repeat of the studio’s biggest modern blunder.

Warner Bros. has delayed the release date of The Batman Part II. The Batman sequel is moving from October 1, 2027, to February 18, 2028. The Batman Part II was originally dated for October 3, 2025, before it moved to October 2026 and later to October 2027. If The Batman Part II’s 2028 release date sticks, it will have been just under six years since The Batman premiered in March 2022.

In today’s superhero climate, six years is an extremely long time between sequels. This prompts the question: Will Reeves get a chance to finish his planned trilogy with The Batman Part III? Let’s say The Batman Part II comes out in 2028. The earliest The Batman Part III would likely come out is 2030, but a 2031 date seems more likely.

Are Warner Bros. and DC willing to be patient for The Batman Part III? History says it should be. The alternative, which could be a potential cancellation, would be an even bigger nightmare.

Why canceling The Batman Part III would repeat DC’s Batgirl mistake

The best recent example of why DC should stick it out and not cancel The Batman Part III is Batgirl. In August 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery canceled Batgirl and wrote it off for tax purposes. What’s even worse about the cancellation is that Batgirl had completed filming.

The cancellation of Batgirl set a terrible precedent for future movies and caused an uproar in Hollywood. It’s been nearly four years since the cancellation, and Batgirl’s actors, including J.K. Simmons, are still getting questions about it. Erasing Batgirl from Warner Bros.’ release calendar became a bigger story than the movie itself.

With all due respect to Batgirl, canceling a Batman movie would make even bigger headlines. It would also likely lead to more outcry from fans. The Batman received critical acclaim and a positive reception from fans. The anticipation for The Batman Part II has only increased with the delay. It would be silly to cancel The Batman Part III, especially if the sequel improves on the original.

I understand the issue with extending The Batman Crime Saga delays James Gunn‘s version of Batman in the DCU. However, Reeves’ Batman is a proven commodity that fans like. DC isn’t in a position to take risks right now after the Supergirl debacle. The studio should stick with Reeves for now and let him finish his trilogy.
