DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has finally spoken on the speculation that the DC Universe has secretly cast its new Batman. The filmmaker addressed the rumor directly on social media, giving a brief but definitive response that leaves the coveted role still up for debate.
James Gunn debunks yet another DCU Batman casting rumor
Gunn took to Threads this week after a fan urged him to address what they described as “a lot of rumor circulating” about a done deal for the DCU’s Batman. His reply was, “De and bunked.” The speculation had intensified during and immediately after San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), where conversations about who might inherit the cape and cowl dominated fan discussions. Gunn’s intervention makes clear that no actor has signed on to play Bruce Wayne in Andy Muschietti’s upcoming The Brave and the Bold.
This is far from the first time Gunn has had to manage expectations around the role. In 2024, he dismissed similar chatter by stating, “Keep getting this question, don’t know where it’s coming from but, wherever it is, it’s totally false. We don’t have a script yet.” That position appears unchanged, reinforcing that the project remains in early development.
The vacuum has inevitably fueled persistent fan campaigns. Where Supernatural star Jensen Ackles once dominated fancast conversations, attention has since shifted toward Alan Ritchson. However, Ritchson himself has now publicly poured cold water on the idea. During a SDCC panel, he confirmed conversations are underway for a different character entirely. “Maybe Batman is in the future, but I don’t think it is cause we are having conversations about another character,” he said. The actor had previously joked about the relentless fan interest, saying, “This thing will not die. I get asked every day if I’m playing Batman.”
With no script, no casting, and no production timeline announced, the DCU Batman remains a blank slate. Meanwhile, DC Studios is keeping the character busy elsewhere. Bruce Timm’s Batman: Caped Crusader returns this week, the R-rated Batman: Knightfall starring Anson Mount releases in September, and Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II is now filming ahead of its 2028 release.
