Star Trek Director Responds to Criticism Over Brave New World’s Most Controversial Episode

Star Trek: Strange New World’s latest episode from Season 4 became one of the most divisive episodes and received mixed reactions. In a new interview, the director Axelle Carolyn addressed the criticism surrounding the episode’s unanswered questions.

In a new interview with TrekMovie, Carolyn addressed the mixed reactions to “The Griffin Incident,” the horror-themed episode that introduced a disturbing mystery involving the USS Griffin. It also introduced Division 12, a secretive group within Starfleet that feels like the franchise’s equivalent to X-Files. However, that received backlash from the longtime fans, which Carolyn directly acknowledged in the interview.

The Belgian filmmaker explained that she understood why fans wanted a clear scientific explanation by the episode’s end. She argued that Star Trek does not need to solve “every mystery within the space of 50 minutes [usual runtime for an episode]”. According to Carolyn, there is still a scientific explanation for Griffin’s disappearance, adding that the crew wasn’t able to figure it out yet with the information. “They’re just saying, within the scope of our investigation right now, we can’t solve it,” she added.

She also further added that leaving some questions open doesn’t necessarily go against what Star Trek stands for. “I can see how it breaks the mold of a lot of Star Trek episodes, but every once in a while, just thinking there are mysteries that are bigger than us and things that are not quite explained yet, I kind of find that good,” she told TrekMovie.
