Misha Collins just exposed the real reason Gotham Knights never stood a chance. The actor broke down why the CW’s DC series was doomed before it could even find its footing.
Misha Collins links Gotham Knights’ end to the CW’s corporate transition
Misha Collins recently spoke with ComicBook about the cancellation of The CW’s Gotham Knights. The actor played Harvey Dent in the one-season DC show that premiered in 2023. Collins attributed the show’s early end to the network’s corporate transition rather than creative shortcomings.
The Supernatural alum expressed his fondness for the role and the series’ trajectory. “Such a cool character. It was so much fun, and I think that series, you know, we only did 13 episodes, and by the end of the run of that series, I think the show really found its footing, and I was really pleased with it,” Collins said. However, the actor acknowledged that external forces worked against the show’s survival.
Collins pointed directly to the CW’s ownership changes as the primary factor. “We were also, unfortunately, victims of the CW network’s transition. So, that show, any other year on the CW, would have carried on and been quite successful, but we found ourselves landing at that home on the air at a time when it just wasn’t going to work. So, corporate machinations ended up conspiring against us,” he explained. Nexstar Media Group obtained a controlling stake in the CW Network in 2022. The resulting restructuring significantly impacted programming decisions across the network.
Gotham Knights centered on Bruce Wayne’s adopted son, Turner Hayes, following Batman’s death. The series featured several well-known DC characters alongside Collins’ Harvey Dent. Despite its cancellation, Collins reflected warmly on his time with the show.
“I did get to have the opportunity to make the transition from Harvey Dent to Two-Face, and that was just super cool. I really loved doing it, and I had so much fun with James [Stoteraux] and Chad [Fiveash], the showrunners, and the rest of the cast there. It was a very positive experience for me,” Collins added. All 13 episodes currently remain available to stream on HBO Max.
