The DCU is set to expand in a wild way with the upcoming The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a mockumentary that features the iconic DC villain in an interesting light. Early set videos of the show have begun making their way online, and show why the risky DCU show will work.
The People v. Gorilla Grodd comes from the duo of Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who also created the hit Netflix mockumentary series American Vandal. The series is presented as a documentary hosted by Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), and focuses on the trial of Gorilla Grodd (Jimmy Tatro), and whether or not he was wrongfully convicted of the murder of his father, the king of Gorilla City.
With a show with as wild of a premise as The People v. Gorilla Grodd, set videos are bound to cause controversy. They have here as well, but while some are complaining about this being the next DCU project, early looks at the show clearly show why James Gunn has taken the bet on it.
The People v. Gorilla Grodd should be celebrated, not hated
Early criticism against The People v. Gorilla Grodd have mainly been about the DCU as a whole. Currently, the large cinematic universe has not delivered a Batman, Wonder Woman, or The Flash on screen, leaving many to lament the lack of “big heroes” available. Despite Superman, Supergirl, and the Green Lanterns slowly being introduced, fans feel Gunn should be doing more than something like the Grodd show.
However, they couldn’t be more wrong. Early set videos of The People v. Gorilla Grodd show that the show is clearly going to lean into the comedic genre more than we thought. Videos show a gigantic gorilla on set of a college wearing classic college student attire, singing in acapella groups, and even trying to impress a girl while on campus.
From afar, it looks a bit cheesy, but it works perfectly for the DCU’s formula. Shows like Peacemaker, Creature Commandos, and more have all succeeded because they buck against the traditional “comic book” formula, and introduce characters in new ways. The People v. Gorilla Grodd is looking to be no different, and will likely be just as successful for it.
Of course, the show will likely have its moments of seriousness. For fans of the comic book, we all know that Grodd is not some fun-loving, cheerful college student. If anything, these scenes will likely just be propaganda introduced by Grodd to try and show that he is not the type to try and overthrow his father. We’ll also likely get plenty of teases for the bigger heroes of the DCU, as well.
While many might be desperately waiting to see what the DCU has in store for its biggest heroes, fans should actually be happy we’re getting these looks into other characters. We’ll almost certainly be getting Batman, Wonder Woman, and more down the line, but having characters like Grodd already established will make their entrance into bigger movies all the easier.
