James Gunn has finally addressed the question on many DC fans’ minds: when will Peacemaker return? His answer, however, may leave many scratching their heads. The DC Studios co-CEO recently engaged with a fan on Threads who asked when Peacemaker or any of the 11th Street Kids would be seen again in the DCU.

Gunn’s response on Threads was a single thinking-face emoji, a cryptic non-answer that offers no concrete timeline but certainly isn’t a denial. While the emoji is far from a confirmation of a Season 3 of Peacemaker, it aligns with Gunn’s previous comments about the character’s future.
After all, Peacemaker Season 2 closed on episode 8, “Full Nelson,” with John Cena’s character Smith captured by ARGUS agents and shoved through a portal onto Salvation, a hostile alternate world being used as a prison for metahumans, as Rick Flag Sr. and company seal the only doorway behind him. The screen cuts to black on Smith trapped and alone, with something unseen roaring from a nearby forest.
Meanwhile, the rest of the 11th Street Kids, Harcourt, Adebayo, Economos, and Vigilante, regroup and launch Checkmate, a new spy agency meant to counter ARGUS, alongside DCU newcomers Sasha Bordeaux, Langston Fleury, and Judomaster.
James Gunn has been cagey about what comes next even before this latest exchange. On the season finale episode of the Official Peacemaker Podcast, he said the show as fans know it may be done, calling it “the final episode of Peacemaker season 2… [and] maybe the final episode of Peacemaker, really.”
But he immediately softened that by adding the characters will return “in the future of the DCU in not too long,” while stressing “we’ll see exactly what form” that takes. He has also floated Salvation itself as connective tissue for the DCU’s next chapter, telling the podcast it’s “where we’re sort of beginning part of the larger story.”
For now, the emoji is the closest thing to an official update fans have. Whether Peacemaker returns in a future movie, a spinoff, or another season remains unconfirmed.
