Stephen Amell says Baywatch reboot is secretly ‘a superhero show’

Stephen Amell has compared the upcoming Baywatch reboot to a “superhero show.” Putting on the iconic red swimsuit reminded him of Arrow. Speaking in an interview with ScreenRant, Amell explained how the new series differs from the original. The show will also try to “carve [their] own path.”

He added, “We can never ever ever be the original. Matt Nix, who’s the showrunner, [has] done shows like Burn Notice and shows like that. He’s really tried to inject humanity. The first season, I don’t think this is a spoiler, but it’s a father-daughter story. It’s about a father and daughter who have never met coming together.”

Amell was “halfway through the pilot” when realization hit. He suddenly realized it was a “superhero show.” He said, “It’s is fully a superhero show when you put on your red swimsuit, or swim trunks, or speedo, as the case may be. Not yet.”

Amell said it resembles Oliver Queen’s transformation in Arrow. “To me is no different than Oliver putting his hood up and grabbing his bow. It really, actually, very much feels the same way. So I’m excited about that. I’m excited that I’m playing my age,” he explained.

Amell likes Hobie because the character stays incredibly calm even when lives are at risk. “I like Hobie, my character, because when everything is going wrong and lives are on the line, he couldn’t be [calmer]. He couldn’t be more in control,” the actor said.

“He couldn’t be more thoughtful and steady. But his daughter wants to go to a party and stay up past 11, he doesn’t know what to do. So that was really fun, and there are humorous elements of it that that I really enjoyed getting to play,” Amell added.

The reboot comes from Gregory J. Bonann and Lara Olsen. Amell stars as Captain Hobie Buchannon in the series. He is Mitch’s son from the original show. He becomes the reboot’s head lifeguard and protagonist.

A new generation of lifeguards joins him in California. The cast includes Taddeus LaGrone, Hassie Harrison, Brooks Nader, Noah Beck, and Shay Mitchell. Original stars will also return for the reboot. Erika Eleniak returns as Shauni McClain, and David Chokachi also returns as Cody Madison.

Baywatch reboot premieres in January 2027 on Fox.
