Sauron is preparing for another major chapter in Prime Video‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3. Charlie Vickers will reprise the role of the Dark Lord when the series returns on November 11, 2026. The new season will continue Sauron’s rise across Middle-earth as he works to strengthen his power and achieve his larger ambitions.
Entertainment Weekly has now revealed script pages from Sauron’s Season 3 introductory scene. The preview shows a far more violent opening than fans might expect. Sauron begins the season at his forge in Barad-dûr, trying to create something powerful. Co-showrunner Patrick McKay said the team wanted to “start in a slightly different way.” He also noted that Season 3 is the point when Sauron makes the One Ring.
The scene quickly becomes violent. Sauron creates a golden ring and forces a nervous Orc to put it on. The Orc’s hand then bursts into flames before the flames reduce him to a smoldering heap of bone. The ring also disintegrates in Sauron’s hand. However, this is not the first Orc to suffer from one of Sauron’s experiments.
Why Sauron keeps failing to forge the One Ring
Sauron has already spent five years attempting to create the One Ring when Season 3 begins. According to co-showrunner J.D. Payne, he still “hasn’t got the recipe right yet.” The ring needs to be powerful enough to rule the three Elven Rings, the seven Dwarf Rings, and the nine Rings of Men.
Sauron also created this problem for himself. He ordered the records about Celebrimbor’s ring-making methods burned because he believed he had learned everything he needed. However, Sauron eventually realizes that he did not know enough to complete the One Ring.
Payne said, “Sauron’s own hubris has gotten the better of him.” His past decision now comes back to haunt him. The repeated failures also affect Sauron personally. Meanwhile, Vickers said, “Sauron has fallen back down that rabbit hole of frustration and darkness.” He added, “In killing Celebrimbor, he has lost control and killed the person that could have helped him most on this quest. So he is doubting himself.”
As a result, he orders the Orcs to search for Celebrimbor’s remaining records. The search brings Marnûkh into the story, giving Sauron another opportunity to manipulate those around him.
