One of Kristen Stewart‘s early horror movies can be streamed at no extra cost. The Messengers, the 2007 supernatural horror movie produced by Sam Raimi, is now available on ad-supported streaming services including Tubi, Pluto TV, and YouTube.
Directed by Danny and Oxide Pang, The Messengers follows a Chicago family that moves to an isolated sunflower farm in North Dakota. The movie stars Stewart as 16-year-old Jess Solomon, who soon discovers that the family’s new home holds a disturbing history.
Raimi and Rob Tapert produced the movie through Ghost House Pictures. It marked the Pang brothers’ English-language Hollywood debut and opened at No. 1 at the North American box office. The film earned nearly $54 million worldwide against a reported $16 million production budget.
Stewart was still several years away from becoming an international star through the Twilight franchise when The Messengers arrived in theaters.
The supernatural mystery turns the Solomon family’s quiet farm into a nightmare
Jess moves to the farm with her parents, Roy and Denise Solomon, and her younger brother, Ben. Roy hopes to rebuild the family’s finances by growing sunflowers, but the property quickly proves to be more dangerous than expected.
Jess and Ben begin seeing strange figures inside the house. The spirit appears on walls, ceilings, and other parts of the property, leaving Jess convinced that something supernatural is happening.
Her parents initially reject her claims. Jess had previously been involved in a drunk-driving accident that injured Ben, giving her parents another reason to question what she says she is seeing.
The family’s situation changes after John Burwell, a drifter hired to help Roy with the farm, arrives. His presence eventually connects the family to the property’s violent past.
The movie combines supernatural horror with elements of a haunted-house mystery. Its isolated setting keeps the Solomon family separated from outside help as Jess begins to understand what happened to the previous residents.
The Messengers was a milestone in Stewart’s career before Twilight transformed her into a global star.
