AMC Recaps Waling Dead Season Premiere in Emoji Form | CBR

The Walking Dead launched its tenth season on Sunday and AMC celebrated the event with a particularly novel recap on the show’s official Twitter page.

The cable network used emojis to tell a unique visual recap of the Season 10 premiere. Since it is all in emoji form, it technically was spoiler-free, but we will demonstrate to you how well the emojis did in recapping the show, so there are some spoilers ahead!

The first emojis seem clearly out of place, as they depict the Earth itself and a satellite, but sure enough, the episode opened with the sight of a Russian satellite in outer space as it plummets to the world below. The crash of the satellite was intermixed into the various individual plotlines that came together in the episode.

We next see a medieval-looking shield and bow and arrow, along with a boat and zombies. This references the first vignette of the premiere, dubbed “Training Day,” where the heroes use medieval weaponry to wipe out the zombies that have arrived on “zombie ships.”

We then see emojis denoting Judith telling the story of her father’s heroic sacrifice in the second vignette, “Skin,” right as the satellite comes crashing down to Earth.

“Bird Wisdom” shows Eugene and Rosita dealing with baby Coco. AMC missed out on an opportunity to use the tomato emoji to symbolize Negan’s seeming transformation into a farmer. After all, new character Dante gets a doctor emoji and he just joined the show!

Probably the most inspired section of emojis was the group that symbolized Daryl and Carol discussing their relationship. We see Daryl’s bike and his dog and then a highway and a cactus as a reference to Daryl asking Carol to just leave with him for New Mexico (in the vignette titled “New Mexico,” naturally). Of course, things can never be simple for our heroes, so the satellite crashed and as the emojis demonstrated, the crash saw a good deal of fire in the woods as the heroes had to struggle to extinguish the burning zombies before they spread to the rest of the woods (and thus spread the fire along with them). They cleverly used their old school weapons to put out the blazing zombies.

Then, in a wonderful scene in the episode that is detailed well in the emojis, the episode ends with Carol and Alpha locking eyes on each other, which is shown in emoji form as a person with a spectacle and then a woman with grey hair and a bald person (Carol and Alpha, respectively).

This was a clever piece of work by AMC.
