WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Antlers, now in theaters.
In Scott Cooper’s Antlers, immense horror unfolds as a meth dealer, Frank (Scott Haze), slowly turns into a Wendigo while caring for two sons. Frank’s appetite for human flesh quickly kills off his humanity, forcing his son Lucas to lock him in a room along with the infected younger brother, Aiden, feeding them both animal parts. And as the beast inside starts to get uncontrollable, Antlers delivers some gruesome deaths.
Kenny’s cooking meth with Frank as the film starts in the mining caves of Crispus Falls. However, they start hearing weird animal noises, and as the lights go out, something attacks them both. The audience doesn’t know it’s the spirit possessing Frank, pinning Kenny down and mauling him like a zombie. There are then flashes of Kenny being ripped apart, with a later scene displaying his fully-mutilated body in a graphic moment in the woods.
Clint, the teen bully, harasses Frank’s son, Lucas, in school, and Lucas pranks him back, which leads to Clint attacking the kid in the forest nearby in the small Oregon town. However, Frank finally turns into the Wendigo and escapes. He then monitors Lucas from a tree before leaping down and feasting on Clint. The movie shows the attack in the background as Lucas runs, but enough is shown for the gory point to get across.
Lucas’ principal, Ellen, is the one who accidentally frees Frank when she breaks into the home to find Lucas and Aiden. Sadly, she’s ambushed by Frank, who’s like a vampire now, using his razor-sharp teeth to suck on her neck and tear her face apart. This is a lot visible as he drains her blood, which bolsters his energy so he can turn into his final deer form.
Paul, the town sheriff, stations Dan at his home to look after Paul’s sister, Julia, and Lucas, her student. However, in the dark of night, the Wendigo comes, laying a trap by placing an infected Aiden in the tool shed. As Dan finds the kid and calls in for help, the movie produces a massive jump scare as he’s gored from the back and levitated. And it’s a Mortal Kombat-style fatality as the Wendigo tosses him aside, showing no mercy.
After eating Ellen, Frank’s heart of fire activates, which means his body’s about to give birth to the Wendigo. The antlers then emerge from his mouth in a scary scene, with his face clearly ripping open to let the monster out. It cuts away from the final burst, but the shots when Julia and Co. find him paint the rest of the picture. The charred husk then splits open, which frightens Paul because he now believes something devilish is loose.
The beast faces Julia in the cave as she comes to rescue Lucas. And she ends up using mining tools in the darkness, capitalizing on the lone flare she has and impaling him. Lucas also stabs the Wendigo in the back, allowing Julia to use the blade on the felled creature. She cuts it open and extracts its heart, which is what the Indigenous people believed would kill it.
