Concept art for a canceled sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight made its way online, revealing a very different take on Bruce Wayne.
The images, which were posted to the ArtStation account of concept artist Goran Bukvic, depict an aged Bruce Wayne, who was supposedly set to star in a canceled game known only as Project Sabbath. His stature seems more fragile, as he slouches forward while in the Batsuit. The most notable feature is the gigantic grey beard bursting forth from underneath the cowl. Early reports on the existence of the Arkham Knight sequel suggested that the game would star an older Batman, one that was more broken due to years of fighting Gotham’s criminals. The concept art seems to confirm this idea, with visible leg braces built into the suit, likely designed to provide the older hero with extra support and stability.
“Note – this is NOT concept art for upcoming Batman movie, These concepts were done for a cancelled game a long time ago. Had a lot of fun with these,” writes Bukvic, who worked for Warner Bros. Games in 2016. They don’t explicitly state that the images were done for Project Sabbath but given Arkham’s Knight release in 2015 and previously art, the connection is likely.
Back in 2019, a collection of concept images for Project Sabbath were posted online. These visuals revealed the designs for several iconic villains such as The Penguin, Two-Face, Gorilla Grodd and Black Mask. Reports indicated that Project Sabbath would take place after the events of Arkham Knight and would star Damian Wayne as he adopted the mantle of Batman under the guidance of his father, Bruce Wayne.
While Project Sabbath may never see the light of day, many believe elements of the production were later reworked into the upcoming open-world action game Gotham Knights. Players will step into the boots of the Bat-Family as they attempt to reclaim Gotham City from an uprising of villains following Batman’s unexpected death. Nightwing, Red Hood, Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl and Tim Drake’s Robin will function as the game’s playable characters, each featuring unique combat styles and traversal techniques. Gotham Knights is scheduled to launch in 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
