The Joker has had a tumultuous character arc across Harley Quinn's first two seasons. After Harley broke up with him in the series' first episode, Joker did what anyone who got dumped would do: pretend everything was fine while secretly plotting the takeover of Gotham City. His plan worked for a time, but he soon grew bored with absolute power and was eventually beaten by Harley and Poison Ivy, who threw him into a vat of acidic chemicals meant to "de-Jokerfy" him. Because this is a cartoon, it works: Joker spends most of the second season as an amnesiac, working an honest job as a bartender in Wayne Tower, dating a nurse named Bethany and becoming a surrogate father figure to her kids. Eventually, Harley reversed the process and Joker remembered who he was, but even after that resolved to stay with Bethany, balancing his two lives as a megalomaniacal supervillain and a part of her family.
