Director and designer Joe Johnston criticized Star Wars’ new approach for Boba Fett.
In just a few days, Lucasfilm will debut the first episode of their highly-anticipated new live-action Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett. A spin-off of the blockbuster series The Mandalorian, the new series is set to explore the thrilling realms of the galactic underworld, further building up the legend behind the fan-favorite character.
For years, particularly after Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, fans were curious as to whether or not Boba Fett actually perished in the Sarlacc Pit in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. With scrapped plans for a Boba Fett standalone film repurposed into a TV series for Disney Plus, fans will get to know the man behind the mask more than ever before.
However, Joe Johnston, whom designed the famous armor of Boba Fett doesn’t agree with the current approach to the Star Wars character. In an interview with The New York Times, he shared that he would’ve preferred to keep his face obscured:
“I never would have shown his face. I would never have had an actor underneath where he takes the helmet off and you see who it is. I think that eliminates a lot of the mystery. Before that helmet comes off, he can be anybody.”
It turns out debates on Star Wars are not exclusive to the fervent fanbase. To hear Joe Johnston’s preferred approach to bringing Boba Fett to life is interesting given that he had a hand in designing the iconic armor that made the character famous in the first place. Either way, Lucasfilm opted to bring Temuera Morrison in to play the character years after he first portrayed Jango Fett in the Prequel Trilogy, and now we will learn more about his new adventures in the upcoming series.

The Book of Boba Fett, a thrilling Star Wars adventure, finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the Galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.
Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, and Kathleen Kennedy are all executive producers on The Mandalorian spin-off with episodes directed by Rodriguez, Favreau, Filoni, and Bryce Dallas Howard. The series stars Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen, and Jennifer Beals.
