Disney is pushing Marvel Studios’ Eternals for a variety of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
Marvel Studios is pushing one of its most controversial films for Oscar gold. Disney debuted Eternals in cinemas in early November to middling reception, making it the first Marvel Studios project to receive a rotten rating from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s commercial viability also dissipated with the less than stellar fan chatter, resulting in a gross of $400 million on a budget of $200 million.
While Eternals may not have been the commercial or critical darling that Disney had been hoping for, Chloe Zhao’s epic take on the Marvel formula was undeniably a unique approach. While it wasn’t perfect, it shot for the stars and took risks that most films from the studio just don’t seem to take these days. With its mature themes and philosophical musings, the film, on paper, is the perfect project for Disney to push for at the Oscars.
While social media buzz has been dominated by Marvel Studios’ push for Spider-Man: No Way Home at the ceremony, it has been revealed that Disney is also launching a campaign for Chloe Zhao’s sci-fi epic. Below, you can find the list of players Marvel Studios and Disney are imploring the Academy to consider for Oscar gold this year.

Superhero and comic book films have recently begun to pick up momentum at the Oscars. Films like The Dark Knight, Joker, and Black Panther have all landed nominations at the awards ceremony. No superhero film has bagged the prestigious Best Picture nomination but things could very well change at this year’s upcoming ceremony.
Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:
The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals will hit Disney Plus on January 12 and home media formats on February 15. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the film’s characters, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
