Emma Watson & Rupert Grint Almost Walked Away From ‘Harry Potter’ Roles

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint opened up about almost exiting the Harry Potter franchise years ago.

The Harry Potter series is one of a kind, mainly due to seeing stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint grow up on the big screen across eight films. With the first film being released 20 years ago, HBO Max is releasing the Return to Hogwarts reunion event on New Year’s Day to celebrate.

In the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special, Emma Watson looked back at the time she almost moved on from the franchise before the fifth film:

“I think I was scared. I don’t know if you ever felt like it got to a tipping point where you were like, ‘This is kind of forever now.’ It was around the time of Order of the Phoenix when things started getting spicy for all of us.”

Emma Watson then revealed what brought her back to the Harry Potter series after considering a departure:

“The fame thing had finally hit home – in a big way. No-one had to convince me to see it through. The fans genuinely wanted me to succeed, and they all genuinely have each other’s backs. How great is that?”

Rupert Grint also admitted he had similar sentiments as Emma Watson in the Harry Potter reunion special:

“I also had sort of similar feelings to Emma, contemplating what life would be like if I called it a day. We never really spoke about it. I guess we were just going through it at our own pace, we were kind of in the moment at the time. It just didn’t really occur to us that we were all probably kind of having similar feelings.”

The next major installment in the Harry Potter franchise will be Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The upcoming film recently dropped its first trailer for what is planned to be the third film of five from JK Rowling.

Directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by JK Rowling and Steve Kloves, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Callum Turner, William Nadylam, Poppy Corby-Tuech, Jessica Williams, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will hit theaters on April 15, 2022, while Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will hit HBO Max on January 1, 2022.
