‘Eternals’ Star Angelina Jolie Reveals Why She Joined The MCU

Eternals star Angelina Jolie revealed why she decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

For as long as comic book movies existed, signing on for a role in any of these films used to be looked down upon from some actors and actresses, dismissing the material as disposable children’s entertainment. However, in the advent of the MCU, DC Films and others, more of Hollywood’s biggest stars are signing onto such films more than ever before. One of the most recent stars taking part in the comic book movie renaissance is none other than Angelina Jolie, who will play Thena in Eternals.

Angelina Jolie is one of Hollywood’s most successful movie stars, and some were caught by surprise to see her join the ensemble cast of Eternals given that she often headlines her own films. However, there was one element about the new MCU that drew the Academy Award-winner’s interest.

In the Fall 2021 issue of Disney’s D23 magazine, the cast of Eternals discussed their involvement in the new MCU film. Angelina Jolie revealed an integral reason as to why she signed on for Chloe Zhao’s film:

“This was the real reason I wanted to make the film. It was to be part of such a diverse family, and it really didn’t matter to me what the size of the role would be.”

Angelina Jolie has a point. With the obvious exception of the most recent Avengers movies, Marvel Studios’ Eternals boasts the most culturally diverse ensemble cast. The cast is reflective of the franchise’s future of more diverse characters taking the spotlight, which include Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon as the new Captain America, the further exploration of Wakanda in the Black Panther sequel, Brie Larson bringing along Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau in The Marvels and most recently, the introduction of Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi.

It will be exciting to see how Angelina Jolie’s Thena is portrayed in Eternals, and if Chloe Zhao’s Academy Award-winning film Nomadland is any indication, it’s safe to say that we’ll be getting yet another remarkable performance from the actress. In particular, to see her with such an exciting ensemble will hopefully bring something truly unique to the MCU.

Often defending Earth from their monstrous counterparts, the Eternals became embroiled in a civil war amongst themselves over whether or not they should conquer the other races. One faction was led by Kronos and the other by his warlike brother named Uranos, with Kronos’ side ultimately winning the conflict while Uranos and his followers were exiled.

Chloé Zhao is directing Eternals from a script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
