Jack Dylan Grazer Thinks ‘Shazam!’ Will Only Continue Through This DC Crossover

Is the Shazam! franchise done for good? Jack Dylan Grazer thinks he’ll only return to the series in a Black Adam-focused project.

It’s no secret that Shazam! Fury of the Gods bombed at the box office, with a generally mediocre film caught in a whirlpool of controversies and reboots. This has left many to assume the franchise is dead in the water. This includes one of the film’s stars Jack Dylan Grazer, who believes he’ll likely only return as Freddy Freeman in a potential Black Adam sequel.

“I don’t know, man. I don’t want to steal the thunder from [my new series] Spiderwick [Chronicles], but I will say probably not,” Grazer told CBR during a recent interview. “I don’t know if there was an article that [director] David Sandberg posted, he said, ‘I will never make another superhero movie again.’ Because I guess Shazam! 2 tanked.”

“I liked it. I thought it was a good movie. I liked it, but box office was like, ‘Suck this.’ Whatever,” He continued. “If it happens, it happens, and I think that if it does happen – and who’s to say that my word has any authority – but if it does happen, it will probably be from a Black Adam thing. Black Adam will invite Shazam into that world.”

This comes as a bit of irony given one of the biggest controversies of the Shazam! press cycle was the lack of Black Adam in the film. Though given Black Adam was also a relative box office bomb and Dwayne Johnson has stepped away from the DC Universe role, it’s not likely that Jack Dylan Grazer or any other Shazam! star will be returning for a sequel.

The Recasting Of The DC Universe

Jack Dylan Grazer isn’t the only person being recast. James Gunn and Peter Safran seemingly want a fresh slate for the DC Universe, recasting every actor from a franchise that wasn’t heavily tied to the old universe. Given both Shazam! and Black Adam had ties to Henry Cavill’s Superman, this left all the actors involved in the dust.

Other heroes joining the Shazam! cast as being cut from the DC Universe include Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller’s Flash, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg. Only the Peacemaker cast, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, and Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle are confirmed to return in the new DCU at this time.
