James Gunn Had A ‘Hard Time’ With The ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Script

Last year saw the long-awaited release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, it seems the film’s script didn’t come as naturally to James Gunn as some of his other projects.

Many people view Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as James Gunn’s magnum opus, bringing both a heart and seriousness that isn’t often found in superhero films. It seems the quality of the work was a natural result of the effort Gunn put in to writing the screenplay as, according to the director, he had a hard time wrapping up the story of the MCU’s most beloved team:

“No. Marvel changed nothing,” Gunn revealed on Threads when asked if the film’s long production was a result of changes from the studio. “I just had a hard time wrapping things up. And I was running out of steam until I walked away and did The Suicide Squad and came back.”

“But even then it was not the most pleasant writing experience I’ve ever had. Just pure willpower pushing it through.”

Many non-writers assume that every great screenplay comes from divine inspiration to the writer. More often than not, the best scripts come from writers with the discipline to push through the times they have no ideas. While it’s unfortunate James Gunn didn’t have the best time on his final MCU film, his effort certainly paid off in spades with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The Guardians of the Galaxy’s Final Ride

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji and Maria Bakalova.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 synopsis reads as follows: “Our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere, but it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life – a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
