Joel Kinnaman Says ‘The Suicide Squad’ is James Gunn’s ‘Best Film’

Rick Flag actor Joel Kinnaman believes that The Suicide Squad is James Gunn’s best film.

Joel Kinnaman is one of the few actors from the original Suicide Squad to return for the new one. The hype for the upcoming DC project is through the roof, mostly because Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is at the helm. The film has also received an R-rating, meaning the film can lean into the comic book’s most egregious, crass, and violent themes. And for the Rick Flag actor, The Suicide Squad is the best film that Gunn has ever made.

In a recent interview with Variety, Joel Kinnaman revealed that he and a few others got the chance to see James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad ahead of its August release. Kinnaman’s comments were overwhelmingly positive and he praised Gunn’s film at every possible front that he could.

“We saw it a couple days ago. It’s insane. It’s by far James Gunn’s best movie. It just takes it to another level. It’s an insane film. At the same time, it was very much the movie that I thought it was going to be because the vision was so clear from the beginning. While we were shooting it, it was so clear what we were doing. It’s so entertaining.”

Joel Kinnaman continued by pointing out that he’s biased because, well, he’s in the movie himself.

“I’m of course hopelessly biased, but I found it to be one of the most entertaining films I’ve ever seen.”

The Rick Flag actor also touched upon how the film flowed and how it was well-paced.

“From A to Z, it’s so well-paced, it has such a drive and such comedic timing. It’s funny along the way the whole time, effortlessly. But then I think what really surprised me was I was struck by was how well it flowed, but also how he was able to create these little bubbles, these little moments of emotional depth and visual and emotional poetry. And I felt like it really transcended the genre, and it became something bigger.”

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
