Despite not making the most headlines, production on the Mortal Kombat sequel has quietly chugged along in the background since the Hollywood strikes ended. A new BTS photo confirms the project has officially wrapped filming, with Karl Urban thanking the cast and crew for his wonderful experience in portraying Johnny Cage.

While details about the sequel have been kept under wraps, it certainly seems as though Karl Urban will have a starring role as Johnny Cage given the character’s importance to the Mortal Kombat franchise. The BTS photo also hints at a simplified logo for the film, one fans may see sooner rather than later as the project finalizes a release date.

The history of the Mortal Kombat series

The original Mortal Kombat movie, released in 1995, was a surprise hit and went on to become a cult classic. The 2021 reboot was similarly successful, grossing over $83 million worldwide despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has been a mainstay of the video game industry since the release of the first game in 1992. The series has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and adaptations over the years, with each new entry introducing new characters, gameplay mechanics and storylines.

Fans of the Mortal Kombat series can look forward to the return of director Simon McQuoid for the upcoming sequel. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the 2019 Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and is also working on the new DC Universe with James Gunn, has been tapped to write the screenplay.
