Marvel Almost Had A ‘Heavier Set’ Version Of Kingpin For ‘Hawkeye’

Kingpin almost had a “heavier set” in Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye.

Hawkeye saw the return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, who was last seen in Netflix’s Daredevil. D’Onofrio’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series was the first time a character from the Netflix shows had popped up in the MCU proper. It still remains to be seen if the version we saw in Hawkeye is the same as the one we adored in Netflix’s Daredevil, though we’re certain that’ll be cleared up as D’Onofrio continues to portray the villain.

The version of the character in Hawkeye was far more powerful, as he ripped off doors with ease and even (potentially, though completely likely) survived getting blown up. Despite such strength, Vincent D’Onofrio’s build was shown as is. Meaning, the character wasn’t depicted as bigger or taller than normal, though that was once in the cards at Marvel.

Marvel Studios producer Trinh Tran revealed in Disney Plus’ making-of documentary Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye (via ComicBookMovie) that Kingpin was almost going to have a “heavier set”.

“We had talked about doing a heavier set version of Kingpin. But ultimately, we wanted to go completely different… in a different direction for this character. To put him in that Hawaiian shirt was kind of like a dream come true.

Here is the synopsis for Hawkeye:

Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.

Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Tony Dalton, Fra Free, Brian d’Arcy James, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, Florence Pugh, and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin. Kevin Feige served as an executive producer on the series.

Hawkeye is available to stream on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding Vincent D’Onofrio’s future in the MCU as Kingpin, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
