The Batman hits cinemas in 2022.
A slick concept design imagines Paul Dano rocking the classic Riddler look for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman.
One of the most exciting films Warner Bros. has in its upcoming slate is The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. Set to be a darker, more crime-focused version of Batman, the film is directed by Matt Reeves, best known for his work on the Planet of the Apes reboot films. The first trailer for the superhero film dropped last year, teasing a gritty and novice Batman as he investigates The Riddler, played by Paul Dano. Dano’s voice can be heard throughout the trailer, and he can be briefly seen with a mask on, but we haven’t gotten a clear look at him maskless yet.
Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is clearly trying to reinvent the franchise, making it more in line with criminal films like Zodiac and Se7en than that phantasmic Batman v Superman or Justice League. With The Riddler the main villain in the film, all eyes have turned to Paul Dano to provide audiences with a mature and sinister take on the character, more in line with cryptic serial killers than goofy illusionists. A new concept design imagines Dano’s Riddler looking the classic Riddler look, a far cry from the more grounded and terrifying mask that he wears in The Batman. Still, Dano looks great in the design, and would certainly be able to stunt the classic look in the upcoming DC film.

The plot of The Batman is being kept under wraps, but we know the film will follow Robert Pattinson as a younger version of Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his second year as the Dark Knight of Gotham City. The film will also show off the hero using his skills as a detective more than what we’ve seen before in previous versions of the hero. It is also expected to be the first installment in a new trilogy of films with Pattinson.
Directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
