Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has confirmed that the sequel will feature DC Film’s Justice League introductory animation.
Now that filming on Shazam! Fury of the Gods has wrapped up, David F. Sandberg is hard at work on the film’s post-production. A production as huge as Fury of the Gods is filled with hundreds, if not thousands of shots that need to be worked out and edited in post, which means we won’t be seeing the Zachary Levi-led sequel until next 2023.
Details on the sequel are slim, though it is known that the Shazam! family will be at the forefront of the film. Lucy Liu, Rachel Zegler, and Helen Mirren are also expected to be playing the Daughters of Atlas who come into direct conflict with Shazam! and his family.
While the first film does exist within the confines of the DCEU – Superman is mentioned numerous times – the action/comedy didn’t feature DC Films’ opening intro which features many members of the Justice League. Taking to Instagram, director David F. Sandberg showed the iconic DC Films’ opening and revealed that he “forgot” to include the Justice League opening animation for the first film and that it will be popping up in the upcoming sequel.
The Justice League animated intro was first used in 2017’s Wonder Woman, ahead of Justice League‘s release. Its great that David F. Sandberg can find humor in the original Shazam! lacking the DC Films’ intro, which appears to be more of a creative choice rather than a mistake.
Here is the official synopsis for Zachary Levi’s first Shazam! movie:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.
Shazam! is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Fury of the Gods will hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
