Tom Holland shared that Sony initially wanted to hide the multiverse plot from the Spider-Man: No Way Home marketing.
Spider-Man: No Way Home finally arrives in theaters this week, and many fans are anticipating the return of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Charlie Cox in the film. Despite the heavily rumored appearances of the beloved characters, Sony is keeping a lid on it all for now.
What we have seen in the Spider-Man: No Way Home marketing is the return of the villains who have appeared in the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield films. Tom Holland told Yahoo! that Sony was originally just going to focus the marketing on a “civil war” between Doctor Strange and Spider-Man for No Way Home:
“Remember when that was the initial marketing plan? The initial plan was to make the film seem like a civil war between myself and Doctor Strange and they were gonna keep everything a secret. That is impossible.”
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:
“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”
Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield heavily rumored to appear.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on December 17, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the film, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
