Spider-Man: No Way Home star Jamie Foxx has praised Electro’s new look and demeanor in the film.
For all of its surprises and twists, the one we still can’t get over is how Spider-Man: No Way Home made Jamie Foxx’s Electro cool. First debuting in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man, Foxx’s portrayal of the energized villain polarized critics and viewers thanks to his abrasive and introverted demeanor, which leaned into sociopathy and failed to illicit empathy. On the other hand, some viewers (like this writer) absolutely loved Foxx’s take on the sparkling menace for being completely unhinged.
Prior to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s release, it was revealed via promotional footage that Jamie Foxx’s Electro would be getting a major overhaul. The villain’s sparky, crackling blue skin would be subbed for the star’s natural skin color, and the awkward ripped out of the 80s look would be replaced with a modern aesthetic, one that resembles Foxx’s regular digs. And Max, the man behind Electro, would no more be a bumbling introverted mess who just wants to feel loved. Instead, he’d be a power-hungry supervillain ready to keep a hold of his new confidence.
In a chat with Marvel.com, Jamie Foxx discussed and praised the new direction Marvel Studios went with, and how it forced the character of Electro to evolve.
“The [biggest] thing that changed is that he acknowledged the way he looked. He acknowledged, ‘Oh, I like this, I dig this.’ By doing that, it answers any questions like why or what’s this thing? Being able to do that, and just bringing a little of the way I wanted to talk and how I wanted to present myself, [Electro] has a little hipness to him.”
“That was the whole team. A whole Spider-Man team on how to make this guy cool. How do we make him impactful, but make him a little more grounded? When he acquired some [abilities], it really made sense in the way he was able to project himself.”
Jamie Foxx briefly praised the character’s Stark-powered suit, which features “a wink and nod to the comic book character”. Say what you will about the new take on Electro, but at least he had more confidence, which is exactly what Max wanted when he first debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Dreams can come true.
