As San Diego Comic-Con 2024 opens its doors this Thursday, DC Studios has decided not to feature James Gunn’s Superman —the studio’s highly anticipated superhero film starring David Corenswet — in its own panel.
DC Studios Co-Chief Peter Safran explained the decision to The Wrap, citing timing issues. “From my perspective, it’s just too soon,” Safran told the trade. During the interview, Safran elaborated on the studio’s strategy, emphasizing the importance of delivering a strong impression with DC’s initial foray into the revamped Superman saga. “A year throw is truthfully a long time for a campaign and so, from our perspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period, rather than stretching it out, that’s our instinct on that,” he said.
Safran also noted that Gunn has not yet completed filming, which is a factor in their promotional timeline. “James hasn’t wrapped yet. I think when you put your first foot forward, for us, for our first theatrical live action experience, there’s a lot of expectation on that. And we really have to make sure we deliver every step of the way, but certainly with the first time out. So that’s why we opted not to be there,” he added.
Despite the absence at this year’s Comic-Con, Safran assured fans that Superman will soon become a significant presence. “Believe me, there’s gonna be no shortage of Superman in your life over the next 12 months.”

Superman is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media.
