Aaron Pierre Reveals Which Acting Role Was More Intimidating Than Star Wars & Lanterns

Before taking on the mantle of DC Universe superhero John Stewart in Lanterns or stepping into a galaxy far, far away, Aaron Pierre faced an acting trial that surpassed any blockbuster set.

In an interview with SiriusXM, the actor candidly shared that his first acting challenge was when he had to work in theater. This was before the British actor-model rose to prominence, eventually landing major roles in the hit space opera and DCU superhero franchise.

Before Star Wars and Lanterns, Pierre faced a different kind of acting challenge

While he did admit that it was “crazy” to be cast in Star Wars, Pierre went on to confess, “I think for me, my first memory professionally of being intimidated was when I did Othello at Shakespeare’s Globe in London. I was portraying Cassio, who is a lieutenant to Othello. And Mark Rylance, who is just a phenomenal actor and considered, you know, arguably the greatest Shakespearean actor alive at this time, he was playing Iago. That was really, really nerve-wracking for me.”

This dates back to 2018, when the star made his professional stage debut playing Michael Cassio in the production of Othello at Shakespeare’s Globe in London. As challenging as he found the particular gig to be, Pierre found the perfect way to pull up to everyone’s expectations: Take notes from the legend, Mark Rylance.

He continued to share, “I would sneak into rehearsals when I wasn’t called, and I would sit in the back where all the dusty mattresses and used props from previous shows were, and I would just take notes extensively, you know. Because it was the first time, I’d only ever seen him on stage when all of his character work and pre-production work had been done. And to see him figuring it out, getting to see behind the curtain, was an amazing experience.”

The preparation ultimately paid off, and it’s incredible how far Pierre has come. In the Star Wars lore, he plays a Jedi Knight in the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter. Meanwhile, he also played a Green Lantern in the recently concluded DCU series, perfectly stacking up his portfolio with some really iconic roles.
