For Power Rangers, finding a new live-action home may come down to more than its recognizable heroes and built-in fan base. As per a new rumor, Amazon Prime Video is in talks to develop the franchise’s next series or movie after Disney+ passed on its own project.
Power Rangers could be moving to Prime Video
According to the X (formerly Twitter) post by scooper MyTimeToShineHello, Amazon Prime Video is reportedly exploring a new Power Rangers project after Disney declined to move forward with the franchise. Talks are said to involve a potential TV series or movie, though no official details about the format or release plans have been confirmed.
The Disney+ project had spent roughly 18 months in development before executives decided not to proceed. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz developed the proposed series, with 20th Television as the studio. The project never reached production, meaning the cancellation stopped it before cameras could roll.
The sticking point was the price tag. Producing a live-action Power Rangers project would mean committing significant funds to elaborate costumes, effects-heavy sequences and large-scale action.
As per Deadline, Disney+ also had to consider whether pouring that money into a franchise owned by another company made financial sense, particularly when the same investment could support brands within Disney’s own portfolio.
Hasbro has controlled the Power Rangers brand since purchasing it from Saban Entertainment in 2018, and the company has been trying to get a fresh live-action adaptation off the ground. Netflix once considered reviving the property but eventually abandoned its plans, prompting Hasbro to look elsewhere for a partner willing to bring the color-coded heroes back to television or theaters.
The franchise’s last major big-screen attempt also calls for this cautious approach. The 2017 reboot brought in approximately $142 million worldwide on a $100 million production budget, falling short of the performance needed to launch the planned series of films.
Dacre Montgomery, who starred in the movie, later said to Movieweb that Lionsgate had envisioned a four-film arc. That larger plan never materialized after the reboot failed to deliver the results the studio needed.
