Avengers: Endgame takes back the box office crown from Avatar
Avengers Endgame: Encore re-release attracted huge numbers of fans. Avengers: Endgame has a runtime of three hours and one minute. The new version also included extra Avengers: Doomsday footage, with different bonus lengths shown in theaters.
The movie returned to theaters on September 25, 2026. The re-release once again brought strong numbers at the box office. That success helped Endgame reclaim the top spot worldwide. Avengers: Endgame Encore earned $4.4 million domestically in it’s second week.
It also made $14.4 million internationally. The new numbers pushed Endgame’s worldwide total to $2.9255 billion, which narrowly surpasses Avatar’s $2.9237 billion total. James Cameron’s Avatar originally became the highest-grossing movie worldwide after its 2009 release.
However, Avengers: Endgame eventually passed it in 2019 and took the record. Avatar reclaimed the crown three years later. The achievement came before the release of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. Its re-release helped the movie move back ahead of Avengers: Endgame.
Last weekend, Avengers Endgame: Encore earned $86 million worldwide. That made it the second-highest-grossing movie re-release ever. The Encore release also opened strongly domestically. It earned $26 million during its first weekend.
The current worldwide rankings feature several major blockbusters. Avengers: Endgame now sits first with over $2.92 billion. Avatar follows closely behind in second place. Spider-Man: Brand New Day ranks third with over $2.5 billion.
Avatar: The Way of Water, Ne Zha 2, and Titanic complete the top six. The list also includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Zootopia 2.
The success of the re-release could be a promising sign for Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo brothers are returning to direct the upcoming MCU movie.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
