James Gunn has hinted that Batman Beyond could one day become a DC Studios movie. The filmmaker shared his interest in the animated property while attending the premiere of DC’s Clayface.
During an interview with Hola! at the premiere night, Gunn said, “I love Batman Beyond. So that’s a great thing for the future.” He did not outline a story or format. Instead, he described the animated property as an idea worth considering for the big screen.
DC Studios has announced The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce Batman and his son, Damian Wayne. That film belongs to the connected DC Universe, while Matt Reeves’ Batman movies remain separate. Gunn has not revealed where a possible Batman Beyond adaptation would fit.

In the same interview, Gunn explained, “I think that’s something that originated in animation that could be a good movie. I mean, obviously, Harley Quinn originated in animation, and she’s become one of the biggest characters in all of comic books. So, why not?”
Created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett, the beloved Batman Beyond animated series debuted in 1999. Set in a futuristic Gotham City, the storyline follows teenager Terry McGinnis, who assumes the mantle of Batman under the mentorship of an elderly Bruce Wayne. Armed with a high-tech suit, Terry battles a new generation of supervillains in the series.
A live-action Batman Beyond feature film was previously in development before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the reins at DC Studios.
Reports said Michael Keaton was set to return as Batman, while Michelle Pfeiffer was linked to the project. Christina Hodson, who wrote The Flash and Batgirl, was reportedly attached to the screenplay. Warner Bros. later shelved it after canceling Batgirl as a tax write-off.
The animated series ran for three seasons before ending in 2001, with Terry still serving as Batman. The character has since continued to appear in comics and other animated stories. Gunn’s remarks leave the door open for a new adaptation, though DC Studios has yet to confirm a film.
