Tom Rhys Harries has offered a glimpse at his unsettling appearance in DC’s upcoming horror film Clayface. His character notes also include a reference to Jim Carrey’s beloved movie The Truman Show.
Harries plays Matt Hagen in Clayface, a Hollywood actor whose life takes a horrifying turn after an attack leaves his face disfigured. An experimental treatment then triggers his transformation into the shape-shifting villain.
Tom Rhys Harries reveals Matt Hagen’s terrifying look in Clayface set video
Harries shared a behind-the-scenes video on his Instagram Story, offering a glimpse of Matt Hagen’s disturbing appearance. In the footage, he walks while wearing a mask and a dark, zip-up hoodie pulled over his head. Dim lighting and cool blue tones reinforce the film’s eerie atmosphere.

Harries’ notes include references to two films. One page features an image from the final scene of The Truman Show, in which Carrey’s Truman reaches the edge of his artificial world. Another page references The Red Balloon, the 1956 French short film.
The Truman Show reference is notable because the film follows a man who discovers that his life has been staged for television. Truman eventually chooses to leave the world created around him. Clayface tells a different story but the reference may offer insight into Harries’ approach to the role. While The Truman Show centers on a man questioning the reality around him, The Red Balloon uses visual storytelling to build an emotional connection. Both films use unusual perspectives to explore their characters’ experiences.
Harries has not publicly explained why he included either film in his notes. The images offer insight into his preparation but do not confirm any direct connections to the story.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface also stars Naomi Ackie as scientist Caitlin Corr. The DC Studios film takes a body-horror approach to one of Batman’s best-known villains.
Clayface is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 23, 2026.
