The History channel’s Ancient Aliens is about to make the jump to movie theaters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary is developing a film based on the long-running docuseries. Spearheading the movie are Cobra Kai showrunners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg.
Heald will direct the film, with Hurwitz and Schlossberg producing alongside former Legendary exec Jon Jashn. The studio has also tapped Luke Ryan to write the movie’s script and serve as an executive producer. Apparently, the filmmakers are developing the project as “a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts, confronting the theories and questions raised by the popular docuseries.”
Ancient Aliens originally debuted in 2010 and is premised on the idea that extraterrestrials made contact with early human civilizations, drawing on “evidence” from various archaeological and textual sources. Although it’s been on the air for over 10 years, the show has been widely dismissed by professionals as nothing more than pseudoscience. It also spawned the famous meme featuring ufologist Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. Currently, Ancient Aliens is in the middle of its 16th season, which premiered last November.
Plot details for the movie are scarce. But given the creators’ background in comedy, the film is likely to be a humorous take on its source material. Before launching Cobra Kai, Hurwitz and Schlossberg wrote all three films in the Harold & Kumar series. They also wrote and directed American Reunion in 2012. Meanwhile, Heald was a co-writer on 2010’s Hot Tub Time Machine.
