Early reactions to Alpha Gang are in. The film received rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes following its world premiere. Critics have mostly said positive things about the new sci-fi comedy starring Dave Bautista.
At the time of writing, Alpha Gang holds an 83% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, exceeding initial fan expectations. The audience’s Popcornmeter score is not available yet. For now, the movie continues to receive mixed-to-positive reactions from critics.
Deadline’s Damon Wise writes, “Fun comes with a big F.U. in this outrageous and frequently pant-wettingly funny aliens-are-among-us comedy Alpha Gang from David and Nathan Zellner.”
Meanwhile, Tomris Laffly from Variety says, “With a ‘50s biker gang aesthetic and a premise that loosely recalls ‘Pleasantville,’ the fiercely indie brothers’ latest oddity is a mostly winsome ensemble affair where everyone commits to the bit.”
According to Robert Daniels from RogerEbert.com, Alpha Gang “is a trippy, hyperviolent explosion of cool style and kooky jokes. It’s also a reminder that Bautista is one of our great deadpan comedians and Harrison Jr. can do just about anything, even seemingly falling in love with a hawk named Periwinkle as he does here.”
However, not all critics were impressed, as Jamie Broadnax from Black Girl Nerds writes, “The film is dull, narratively messy, and weighed down by an uneven plot and distracting sound design.”

The Alpha Gang’s star-studded cast helps power its strong early reviews
Directed by David and Nathan Zellner, Alpha Gang is a science fiction comedy film that follows a group of humanoid aliens who arrive on Earth to destroy it. However, human emotions soon begin to complicate their plans.
The movie features a stellar ensemble cast led by Cate Blanchett. The Oscar-winning actress plays Alpha One, the leader of the alien gang. She shares the screen with other A-listers like Chris Pine, Dave Bautista, Léa Seydoux, Lily-Rose Depp, Adria Arjona, Bae Doona, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Riley Keough.
The actors have several major projects lined up. For instance, Bautista is set to play Kratos in the television adaptation of the video game God of War. Meanwhile, fans believe Adria Arjona will be the next Wonder Woman in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow.
Alpha Gang premiered at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival on September 5. The movie also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13. The theatrical release date has not been announced yet.
