Pugh has now revealed the story behind how her cameo in the film came about.

Florence Pugh recently credited Tom Holland for helping bring Yelena Belova into Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The actress revealed that Holland’s answer during a red-carpet interview several years ago helped generate interest in the possibility of the pair working together. Pugh discussed the unexpected connection while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday.
Pugh said the story dates back to the period following the release of Black Widow in 2021, when she had only recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She began, “You know this all happened because of Tom? Years ago, when I had just kind of started my relationship with Marvel and Black Widow had come out, and Yelena wasn’t as obviously big as all of the other big superheroes.”
The actress continued, “He [Tom] on the red carpet of his previous movie, when someone said, ‘Who do you want to do the next movie with? Do you want it to be with, like, Thor?’ I don’t remember the superheroes, but they were all massive superheroes, and he said, ‘No, actually, I want to do it with Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena.’”
Pugh explained that Holland’s response changed the way audiences viewed the possibility of the two characters appearing together. “So because of that, fans were then so excited about the idea of it, and that started the ball rolling, so thanks to Tom. Thank you, Tom,” the actress concluded.
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Pugh makes a brief appearance as Yelena alongside Holland’s Peter Parker.
