Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Movie Rating Is Totally Different From Most Marvel Superhero Movies

Netflix has confirmed the official MPA rating for its upcoming fantasy reboot, and the classification places Greta Gerwig‘s Narnia movie in family-friendly territory rather than the PG-13 zone most Marvel superhero films occupy.

Netflix’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew receives official MPA rating

The MPA has handed Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew a PG rating. The board cited “thematic elements, fantasy action, some language, brief violence, and smoking” as the reasons behind the classification.

That decision keeps Greta Gerwig’s project consistent with the earlier Chronicles of Narnia live-action adaptations. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader all earned PG ratings as well. Beyond the shared source material, The Magician’s Nephew shares no continuity with those films.

Moreover, the PG label separates this Narnia movie from most Marvel superhero releases, which generally land at PG-13. Families planning a theater trip now have a clearer picture of what to expect.

The rating confirmation follows the debut of the first Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew trailer. Gerwig has spoken warmly about the project (via CBR). “Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary, and IMAX continues to be an incredible partner. I cannot wait for people to see the film in theaters on February 12 and on Netflix on April 2,” she previously said in a statement. “I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life.”

Netflix’s official synopsis describes the film as an adventure that “invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia.” The plot centers on Digory and Polly, two friends on a mission to save a life. Their journey carries them into another world, where an evil sorceress attempts to enslave them. Aslan’s song then shapes a new land that becomes Narnia.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is releasing in theaters on February 12 and streams on Netflix starting April 2.
