Harry Potter’s New Actor Literally Manifested His TV Show Casting

Nick Frost has revealed he didn’t just audition for the role of Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, but rather he quite literally manifested it. The beloved comedic actor, known for films like Hot Fuzz, will take on the mantle of Hogwarts’ gentle half-giant, a role immortalized by the late Robbie Coltrane in the original films.

Nick Frost reveals how he manifested Hagrid role for Harry Potter series

The path to playing Rubeus Hagrid for Nick Frost began not in a Harry Potter casting office, but during a family Christmas tradition. Frost detailed the extraordinary process he undertook after his partner suggested he try to manifest the coveted part.

“I’ve seen all the films. We go through them all as a family during Christmas every year,” Frost told The Guardian. “We start on December 20 and finish a week and a half later. Before I was cast as Hagrid, my partner suggested trying to manifest it. So last Christmas, I watched all the films back to back on the Sky Harry Potter channel, while writing out the word ‘Hagrid’ 7,000 times.”

This dedicated, if unusual, ritual apparently worked. Frost was cast as the iconic Keeper of Keys and Grounds. While thrilled to step into Hagrid’s giant boots, Frost is deeply respectful of late Robbie Coltrane’s legendary performance. He has made it clear, however, that he plans to bring his own nuances to the character, especially given the series’ longer format, which will adapt each book into a full season.

Frost explained his approach to Collider, “I’m going to try and do something, not ‘different,’ I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter, but within that, there’s scope for minutia. I always read Hagrid as he’s like a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child. I think the beauty of being able to do a book a season means I get to explore that a lot more, and I can’t wait.”

The HBO Harry Potter reboot is currently in production and is scheduled to cast its spell on audiences in 2027.
