Ryan Condal confirms House of the Dragon will end after four seasons

Showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that House of the Dragon will end after four seasons. Speaking on the Escape Hatch podcast, Condal said, “We’ve started the writing process for Season 4, which will be the last one.” Season 3 finished filming in late October 2025 and is currently in post-production, while work on the final season’s scripts is underway.

The show’s conclusion was previously unclear. In November 2025, HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys addressed speculation during a presentation in New York. He explained, “For all of [our] shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision. We’ll work with them.” He added that there were no updates at that time and suggested that the network would support whatever direction the creators chose.

Condal made the decision despite the show’s strong viewership. Its Season 2 averaged 25 million viewers per episode, as per HBO (via The Hollywood Reporter). Condal noted, “Knowing there’s only one more season left, it feels like we can leave it all out on the field.”

The second season covered only a small part of the “Dance of the Dragons” from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, leading to concerns about how the remaining story will fit into around 16 episodes left across Seasons 3 and 4. Several major events are still to come, including the Battle of the Gullet, the Tumbleton battles, and other civil war moments in King’s Landing.

Fan reactions online reflect disappointment and concern. One user posted, “Damn. So no adaptation on the reign of Aegon III, Viserys II and their descendants. That’d be good tv.”

Another added, “I love how HBO threw a bone and said hey guys it doesn’t have to end at Season 4… Monsieur Ryan ‘S4 ENDS IT ALL.’”
