Jennifer Lawrence will star in The Flood, the upcoming sci-fi thriller from director Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian, Weapons, and the recent Resident Evil adaptation. The project is a major addition to an already stellar production, with Cregger describing it as his most disturbing film yet.

“Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role,” Cregger quipped (via Entertainment Weekly). He expects “hard prep” to begin in February, with filming targeted for next summer. If that schedule holds, production could start in summer 2027.
Plot details remain under wraps, though Cregger has hinted that The Flood unfolds in outer space. He told Deadline the concept came together under unusual pressure after Steven Spielberg offered him a narrow window to pitch something.
“Flood, I kind of came up with the idea because I was very excited to work with Steven Spielberg, and we had a weird situation where there was a short window where I could have an idea and we could link up together,” Zach Cregger said. “And I entered a mental state I have yet to ever repeat or do prior, where I was in some sort of frenzy where I was just like, ‘[I’ve] got to have an idea for Steven Spielberg!’”
Moreover, the earlier breakthrough came while he watched a sci-fi film with his wife. A character boarded an abandoned spaceship, and the scene sparked a question. “My wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space,’” he recalled. “And I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?’”
He added, “It’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes. It was a total ridiculous moment, but I love it.” Now, with Jennifer Lawrence as part of the cast, The Flood is highly anticipated.
