Marvel may finally be getting the Guardians of the Galaxy back on its slate, but not as another movie this time around. The team, led by Rocket Raccoon, was last seen in the MCU after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
According to scooper James Mack, Disney is currently developing an animated television series based on Guardians of the Galaxy. It is unknown whether this project will be part of the MCU or a new offering similar to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Marvel’s history with Guardians of the Galaxy animation and Disney+
The rumored Guardians of the Galaxy animated series is barely the first time the IP has received such a treatment. The group appeared in their traditional garb (similar to the uniforms seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) in the hit but short-lived animated series, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The characters also made cameos in other animated IPs, such as Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. They also headlined their own animated show, which lasted three seasons.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, much like its contemporaries on Disney XD, took inspiration from the MCU’s iteration of the team. However, it followed its own continuity, separate from the MCU. For example, in the show’s continuity, Peter Quill was the son of the Spartax king J’son rather than Ego the Living Planet.
Given that Secret Wars is set to reset the Marvel continuity, the animated series could pick up where the films left off. Perhaps the original Groot might be restored to the timeline as Rocket’s companion. The MCU could use it to soft-launch characters like Nova before their live-action debuts.
If the series decides not to adhere to MCU canon, a slew of characters could appear in the project, including fan favorites like Thor’s sister Angela, the Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, and Gladiator.
