Kevin Smith says Marvel and Star Wars’ upcoming crossover feels like an MCU movie. The filmmaker is writing Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, the first official comic book crossover between the two franchises. The five-issue series will bring characters from A New Hope into Marvel’s Earth-616 universe.
A reality-shattering spell causes the events of A New Hope to unfold in the MCU’s world. Star Wars characters will encounter heroes and villains from Marvel’s main continuity.
Smith revealed that he approached the project with an MCU movie in mind. He explained his writing process while working on the crossover.

Smith discussed his writing process on the Jay & Silent Bob Are In The Hizzouse podcast with Jason Mewes. He explained the challenge of handling the crossover’s many characters and storylines.
The filmmaker said, “Write it as if you were doing this as an MCU movie. Like a script almost, right? Totally. I mean, it’s very dialogue-heavy, but, you know, it’s very adventure-heavy too.
He added, “So many storylines, threads to cross over. So many characters to service. Like, look at all those characters. And that’s not even everyone who’s in the book, for heaven’s sake. So that’s a lot of, like, all right, so now we got to write his storyline. Now we’re going to write her storyline. Now we got to come back to this. Now we got to get back to that. And I’m still in issue five going, like, oh my God, I set that up and I got to pay it off.”
The main reason for the MCU comparison is the crossover’s large ensemble. Smith had to move between multiple character threads while keeping track of setups that needed later payoffs.
Luke Skywalker, Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca will appear alongside Marvel characters. Doctor Doom will also join Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.
David Marquez is illustrating the series. The first issue arrives in January 2027 for the 50th anniversary of A New Hope. The five-part comic will continue monthly through May.
As of now, Hope Assembles is only a comic book project. Marvel and Lucasfilm have not announced a movie bringing the two franchises together.
