Monstrous MCU Hero Appears in Thunderbolts* Art & It’s Not Abomination or Red Hulk

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* nearly had an even stranger addition, according to newly shared concept artwork. An unused illustration offers a glimpse of how the studio could have expanded its roster with a creature from the MCU’s supernatural corner, but the filmmakers ultimately decided against the idea.

Thunderbolts* art shows Man-Thing could have been a part of the team

Storyboard artist Anthony Lee Winn shared artwork on Instagram depicting Man-Thing alongside the Thunderbolts characters. Director Jake Schreier had seriously considered including the swamp creature, although Marvel ultimately left him out of the finished movie.

Man-Thing previously appeared in Werewolf by Night, making him a potential bridge between Marvel’s supernatural stories and its more conventional superhero adventures. The unused concept also suggests that his origins could have connected him to CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (via Comicbookmovie).

Writer Eric Pearson explained that Man-Thing’s unpredictable nature made the character difficult to accommodate. In comments about the project, Pearson said Valentina viewed the creature as an agent or evidence she wanted destroyed. “Man-Thing [was] an agent or some evidence that Valentina wanted to destroy. He is such an unpredictable creature,“ he explained.

The bigger problem involved balancing Man-Thing with Bob, played by Lewis Pullman. The film needed to focus on Bob’s journey toward discovering his extraordinary power, and Pearson feared the swamp monster would steal attention from that development. “If you are dealing with Bob, why the hell is this normal-looking guy here versus this swamp monster?”

In addition, A Werewolf by Night sequel has not materialized, and the long-rumored Midnight Sons movie still lacks confirmation. However, A future Ghost Rider movie could offer another way to bring Man-Thing back.

Marvel’s ragtag crew brings together Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Pullman’s Bob, alongside fellow troublemakers Ghost, Taskmaster and U.S. Agent. Fans can catch the unconventional superhero squad in action on Disney+, through digital rentals and purchases, or on physical releases in 4K UHD and Blu-ray.
