Netflix’s upcoming animated sci-fi movie, Ray Gunn, featuring the voice of Scarlett Johansson, is set to be released on Netflix on December 18. It will also have a theatrical release in select theaters on December 4.
Releasing on December 18, the movie clashes with the wide releases of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three.
As well as Johansson, Ray Gunn features the voices of Sam Rockwell, Tom Waits, and John Ratzenberger, among others. Directed by Brad Bird, the animated movie currently holds a score of 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews from critics. As per Variety, Johansson spoke in April about collaborating with Bird on the animated project and shared her excitement. She said, “Having the opportunity to collaborate with Brad Bird is a career milestone for me; I have loved his work my entire life. This project is so uniquely special because it is a total realization of where Brad is currently on his artistic journey.”
According to the description under the trailer posted on YouTube, the movie focuses on private detective Raymond Gunn, voiced by Sam Rockwell, who investigates a case involving aliens in the city of Metropia.
Bird spoke to Netflix and revealed how he combined two genres, noir and sci-fi, for the film and stated, “The elevator pitch I came up with is The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers. I like both of those genres, and blending them together seemed fun, and a chance to play with a lot of very cinematic elements and extreme characters.”
