Netflix Show on Stephen King Novel Canceled, Stranger Things Creators Confirm

Netflix’s planned adaptation of Stephen King’s The Talisman is now canceled. The creators behind Stranger Things have now confirmed that the long-gestating project has effectively come to an end at the streaming platform.

Netflix’s The Talisman adaptation confirmed dead by the Duffer Brothers

In 2022, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer were reported to be developing a series adaptation of The Talisman for Netflix, which would have been their first major project outside the Stranger Things universe. However, that plan has now fallen apart.

The Duffer Brothers confirmed to CBR that the adaptation is no longer happening at Netflix. Ross Duffer said, “Sadly, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we’re not involved.” The confirmation comes after years of development challenges surrounding the project.

Matt Duffer suggested that the scale of the novel may have been underestimated early on. “I remember I was, I think it was probably naive of us to think we could break The Talisman,” he said. Ross added that the story’s history in Hollywood made the task even more daunting, sharing that the book has been stuck in development in various forms for decades. “So it’s been in development forever, so I’m sorry that we were not the ones to break the curse,” he explained. Matt concluded, “It will be whoever does it and cracks it.”

The Talisman, published in 1984 by Stephen King and Peter Straub, follows Jack Sawyer, a boy who journeys through a parallel world known as the Territories in quest to find a powerful artifact capable of saving his dying mother. A sequel novel, Black House, came out in 2001, revisiting Jack as an adult with no memory of his earlier adventure. The 1984 book has previously seen a short film adaptation in 2008 and a graphic novel release in 2009. The Talisman’s film version has been circling Hollywood for years under Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, though the Duffer Brothers indicated that progress on that front is still far off.

While The Talisman is now canceled, the Duffer Brothers remain busy with other projects.
