In a Vanity Fair cover story released today, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and some of the lead actors discuss the upcoming shows in the Star Wars universe. We’ve known the basic roadmap for a while. After Obi-Wan Kenobi comes Rogue One prequel Andor in the summer. The Mandalorian season 3 might hit by year’s end, or early 2023. Ahsoka arrives further into 2023, followed by the High Republic-era The Acolyte sometime after that. But now we know the next Star Wars series…and it isn’t Lando.
In fact, Vanity Fair doesn’t mention Lando at all, except obliquely. Kennedy says one lesson learned from Solo‘s lack of success was that they never should have recast Han Solo. “It does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that,” she says. (Apparently no more Alden Ehrenreich, then.) Combine that with the CGI Luke Skywalker we’ve seen recently, and that may not bode well for more Donald Glover Lando.
Because the next show is one codenamed Grammar Rodeo, from the Spider-Man team of director Jon Watts and writer Chris Ford. Taking its pseudonym from a Simpsons episode in which Bart and friends steal a car, it follows “four children, around 11 to 12 years old. Inside Lucasfilm, the show is being described as a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.”
Following that, Taika Waititi’s unnamed feature should become the next theatrical release, with Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron after that. Kevin Feige’s project remains vague for now. And for anyone who may have hoped for brand new stories completely detached from any existing characters, the news may disappoint. “What’s unique about Star Wars is that we’re one story, basically,” says Kennedy. She also notes that Rian Johnson’s trilogy, originally said to be set in an entirely different part of the universe, is back-burnered due to Johnson’s Netflix contract.
There’s plenty more, including Ewan McGregor revealing that Mary Elizabeth Winstead will appear in Ahsoka, over at Vanity Fair. What do you think of the news? Let us know in comments.
