Robert Downey Jr. details his most emotional moment from Avengers: Infinity War
At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos gets his hands on the final Infinity Stone, he wipes out half of the living beings from the universe with a snap of his fingers. Among the many deaths showcased in the final moments, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) turning to dust was perhaps the most emotionally devastating for fans. The scene appears to have also affected Robert Downey Jr., who portrayed Iron Man, equally, if not more so.
In an interview with CBR, the Oppenheimer actor recalled the day he shot the scene. He explained that he wanted to convey a look of “shock and desperation” after Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill disintegrated.
“I knew that Holland at this point was a veteran of… I think it’s his third Marvel film? He’s three in, and he already really gets it. And he’s like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry? Is this about can you bring it or not?’ And he just rakes our hearts,” the actor shared.
Infinity War’s co-director Joe Russo chimed in, saying that he was “crying at the monitor” during the scene.
The Tropic Thunder star continued, “Now, I just need to not move, because Holland is on fuego, and let’s see what we got. I mean, the fact that he was able to command that moment? He really lands the whole emotional impact of the film in eight seconds.”
Notably, all of the decimated characters returned in Endgame when the Avengers reversed Thanos’ snap. In the end, the heroes defeated The Mad Titan, but the victory came at the cost of Iron Man’s life.
Although that marked the end of the road for Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise as the villainous Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which will open in theaters on December 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day debuts next month, on July 31, 2026.
